The Legend

There was an old woman who swallowed a fly. It is not known why she swallowed the fly. Experts agree that she may die.

Behind the Legend

Miss Martha Dowdy of Bracken, Iowa, apparently ate a fly out of some kind of compulsion to eat living things. After the fly, she graduated to the eating of larger and larger creatures, culminating in the eating of an entire live horse in one gulp. She's dead (of course).
